About the Department

The Department of Mathematics at Dr. B. N. Dutta Smriti Mahavidyalaya has earned a reputation for excellence since its inception in 2000. It is known for producing well-established graduates who have made significant contributions in various sectors of society. The department offers both Honours and Pass Courses, with the Honours program admitting 39 students annually and presently supported by six tenured faculty members.

The department's journey began with the General Course in 2000, initially with one substantive faculty member. Dr. Naba Kumar Bej and then Principal Dr. Ranajit Bandyopadhyay played a pivotal role in establishing the Honours course, following a suggestion from the educational directorate, and subsequently expanded the faculty. From 2005, Dr. Anindita Basu served as the department chair for over 14 years, followed by Dr. Tapas Kumar Mondal. In recent years, faculty members such as Dr. Goutam Kumar Ghosh (2015), Dr. Pritha Dan (2019), Mr. Satajit Bhattacharjya (2019), Mr. Satyajit Pal (2019), and Ms. Ishita Ghosh (2019) have joined the department, introducing several initiatives to enhance the department’s growth further.

The department also boasts a well-stocked library, with over 150 books, supporting both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Graduates of the department can pursue further studies in fields like M.Sc., MCA, M. Math, or prepare for competitive exams like Railway, SSC, CGL, UPSC, and banking sector tests. Many alumni have gone on to pursue research in NITs, IITs and abroad and excel in higher education, contributing to various academic and professional sectors at both the state and central levels.
